What does Floriculture represent in Ecuador?
Floriculture has had a huge impact in our national economy and in the families that are direct and indirectly related to it. Growing flowers did not change only the environment but helped thousands of people change their dreams, many times out side their own country, and decided to invest and work in it. Only two decades were needed to position Ecuadorian flowers as the top of the line in the world.
Social Influence
- There are more than 60.000 direct workers hired by the farms and more than 100.000 people that work in businesses related to floriculture.
- 240.000 people depend exclusively of the income generated by this activity.
- Floricultural farms pay monthly 2 million dollars to Social Security, 24 millions per year.
- The average income in this activity is the highest in the agricultural and agroindustrial sectors in Ecuador.
- This activity has the majority of the farms associated with international environmental and laboral highly demanding seals (Max Havelart, Flower Label Program, Sierra Eco, etc.).
Economical Influence
- In the past 10 years the flowers exportation annual growing rate was 19,6%. Almost twice the annual growing rate of China economy.
- In 2004, flowers turned to be the most important non traditional exportable product; the second product after oil, and the third exportation activity in general in the country.
- Flowers are the main private exportation product to United States; and the product with the highest volume of negotiation in FTA.
- Ecuador produces 31% of USA rose imports by United Status and 80% of Russian imports.
- Ecuador exports flowers to 72 different markets world wide.
- There are 4.000 hectars of flowers out of which 2.500 are roses. The total investment is over 1.000 million dollars.
- The floriculture activity generates a business of more than 160 million dollars per year to air tranportation companies; and 90% of the volume is done through Quito International Airport.
Innovation Influence
- Our activity is the highest technology diffuser in the agricultural sector.
- The investment in training and qualification of employees is estimated in 8% of the total expenses which compared to the national media (0,5 %) is by far superior.
- The last years, there has been a great effort of searching for new markets such as China, Ucrania, among others.
Social role of the Floricultural Trade Union
- The floricultural trade union –EXPOFLORES- is the only entity that, by decision of it’s assembly, has as affiliation requirement the accomplishment of the Environmental, Social and Labor Program (“La Flor del Ecuador”).
- EXPOFLORES, is the mentor of OIT program to eradicate child labor and labor exploitation.
- EXPOFLORES, together with local governments and public institutions, promotes an investment increase in human development and institutional modernization.
